Summary:
Matt waits alone for his father to return with his mother and siblings.  After an encounter with bees Matt is rescued by an Indian and his grandson, Attean. Matt agrees to teach Attean how to read.  Over the course of a season the two boys become friends.  Attean learns to read English and Matt learns how to live in the forest.
