Resource: picture book, fiction
Time: 1100s
Place: France?

Summary:
A bear has eaten the letters of Saint Augustine that Brother Hugo borrowed from the library.  To make up for his error, he is tasked with borrowing a the book from another monastery and copying it out.  The book goes through all the steps that are required to make a book from scratch by hand in the 12th century.  All his friends, the other monks help him out with each of the steps.  When his task is completed he must return the manuscript to the other monastery.  I will not give away the ending, it made me chuckle.  This book is very loosely based on a note found in a 12th century manuscript.  The end of this book contains a historical note about illuminated manuscripts and a glossary.  It is illustrated by S. D. Schindler in full color.
