Hypatia was an unusual girl.  In a time and place when women had very few rights Hypatia flourished in learning.  She was taken under the wing of her father, Theon, and learned all kinds of things from fishing and driving a chariot to philosophy, astronomy, natural science and most importunately mathematics. She became a teacher and a scholar.  The author does a good job describing Hypatia's life. There is an author's note on the death of Hypatia and more on math as well as a bibliography.
