Resource: picture book, biography
Time: 1759 - 1799
Place: America

Summary:
When I think of George Washington I think of a military man or of a statesman.  This book takes a look at George from a different perspective.  George was a farmer.  He made his home at Mount Vernon, Virginia, a farm.  He thought about agriculture: plows, crops grown, trees, barns and he had a real thing for manure.  He innovated, invented and experimented to make his farm more productive.  Even in the midst of the Revolutionary War he thought about planting trees and using agriculture to help make this new country great.  There are a sprinkling of quotes from Washington throughout the book.  The author is very up front about George as a slave owner.  She writes a page in the back titled "George's Thoughts on Slavery".  There is also a timeline, a page on "George at Mount Vernon", additional resources, and a bibliography. The book is illustrated by Layne Johnson in full color.
