Resource: picture book
Time: 1861-1865
Place: America

Summary:
Wilmer McLean could say that the Civil War started in his front yard and ended in his parlor.  The first major battle, the battle of Bull Run/Mananas was fought close by his plantation.  After the battle he decided that the war was just too close.  He moved his family to the sleepy village of Appomattox Court House.  His house was chosen as the meeting place where General Lee surrendered to General Grant.  Lulu McLean was four years old when the war started.  She had a little rag doll that she liked to play with.  The book recounts the time when the soldiers took over the plantation, the move to Appomattox Court House, major war events and and life events of the McLeans.  The last few pages tell of the surrender.  Lulu was playing the parlor, when the important men came into her house she left the room, leaving her doll.  It was called the silent witness.  It was taken by the soldiers, along with other small items as souvenirs of the surrender.   There is an interesting Author's note at the end of the book telling what happened to the doll after the war.  While Lulu never saw her doll again, it survived and now is on display at the Appomattox Court House National Park. The book is illustrated in full color by Claire A. Nivola.
