What is History Notebooking

Let's take a minute to move beyond the page and the screen.

What is Notebooking?

Notebooking, quite simply is just a collection of information, organized in a notebook.  You all know how much I love collections.  While notebooking can be used for just about any subject, I think it is ideally suited to the study of History.

What goes into a Notebook?

You can use pre-made worksheet pages or just get a blank sheet or notebook paper and do it yourself.
Here is a short list of things that could be in a history notebook:
  • Maps
  • Drawings/Illustrations
  • Biographic Information
  • Timeline
  • Copywork
  • Quotations
  • Minibooks
  • Movie Reviews
  • Poems
  • Songs
  • Coloring Pages

How to Make a History Notebook?

  1. Decide what purpose your notebook will serve.  Is is a notebook on a particular historical subject like the Civil War, Great Artists, or The Middle Ages.
  2. Find a containment unit.  This could be a three ring binder, a folder, or an actual notebook, spiral bound or composition.  Personally, I like the three ring binder because it gives the most flexibility.
  3. Then start collecting information and put it into the notebook. You can organize it in sections or chronologically or make it a kind of scrapbook with information as you get it.

 How History Magpie Can Help:

The resources on this website and the way they are organized can lead to a very intuitive, delight directed way of learning.  I am launching a brand new store at Teachers Pay Teachers, with worksheet style notebook pages to complement the history resources reviewed here.  They are easy to purchase, print out and go.
