Resource: picture book, biography
Time: 1790 - 1832
Place: France

Summary:
Jean-Francois Champollion loved Egypt.  Even as a young boy he was fascinated with hieroglyphs, even though no one knew what they meant or how to read them.  He filled notebooks with them.  His favorite was the lion, because there was a lion in his last name Champollion. When he was older he heard about the Rosetta Stone.  This is a stone that had an inscription in hieroglyphs, demotic (a cursive Egyptian script) and Greek.  Many believed this was the key to unlocking hieroglyphs.  Jean-Francois had some exciting times as Napoleon fell from power, but eventually he got to study the Rosetta Stone and unlocked the key to deciphering hieroglyphs.  This book is especially fun because there are glyphs sprinkled in the text and explained in the margins.  There is also an epilogue that encourages the reader to find out more about hieroglyphs and gives a handful with their Egyptian and English translation. The book is illustrated in full color.
