Summary:
Everyone wanted George Washington to be the first president of the United States, except George Washington.  He turned down the offer in fact, saying that he would do the job only if the people thought it was "absolutely necessary".  The idea of being the leader of the new country gave his a great deal of anxiety.  He was elected, and traveled to New York, then the capital, to take take his office.  He was celebrated with banquets and parties all the way.  He was very nervous about making his inaugural speech. The speech only lasted for 20 minutes and it was said that he did not look up from his paper the whole time. In the end though George did become president, and a pretty great one at that.  Illustrated in full color by Larry Day.
